Periodontal diseases are infections of gums, which gradually destroy the support of natural teeth. The main cause of gum disease is dental plaque. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins which irritate the gums.
They may cause them to turn red, swell and bleed very easily. If this condition continues untreated the gums then separate from the teeth forming pockets (spaces). The plaque may harden and becomes a rough porous material on the teeth called calculus (or tartar). Calculus may progress below the gum/gingival line , further progressing into periodontal disease. In periodontal disease there is now further weakening of the supporting tissues and more bone loss, hence making the teeth looser..
However, in periodontal disease bleeding, redness and swelling do not have to be present, and for this reason it may remain undetected.
Main causes of periodontal disease are smoking, stress, clenching and biting, diabetes, puberty, oral contraceptives, menopause, medication poor nutrition.
Periodontal care is something we are very aware of in our clinic, and during check ups we always examine the state of the gums. Retaining your teeth is directly related on proper periodontal care and maintenance.
We always advise our patients on oral hygiene instruction and proper hygiene maintenance.
Adults past the age of 35 are more prone to this disease.
Professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progression.
